Dick Henley in Toronto - 2014
Whilst in Canada we were in Toronto for a couple of days. I have been in email contact for a number of years with Dick Henley and arranged to meet up with him whilst I was there.
Dick was at Killerton from ’67-’70. If you have had the time to look through some of the stories on the website, especially the section “Killerton Times” you will have seen and hopefully read of some of Dick’s achievements and escapades as he has sent several stories that I have posted there. It was Dick along with Colin Glue who introduced the Bar Tab!
Prior to leaving for Canada I had arranged a free evening when we would be in Toronto and let Dick know where we would be staying. It turned out that we were less than 10 minutes away from where he worked. In a couple of email exchanges, we arranged he would pick me up and we could go for a drink. I waited in the street outside the house we were staying in, and at the agreed time and Dick cruised down the street in a huge Chevrolet. I stepped into the car and sank into the vast leather seats. We purred through the streets and park in a small car park conveniently situated opposite “The Pour House” Irish Pub.
We had a couple of drinks and chatted about Killerton. Dick has had a busy life since emigrating to Canada. His passion was and still is horse racing, but he is currently a director at Canadian Firefighter Publications Inc.
The common ground of our convesation was obviously Killerton, and I was mesmerised by Dick’s stories of his time and experiences at Killerton, and especially his anecdotes of Sir Richard.
When we returned to the car, it turned out the the car park was in fact the car park adjacent to the offices where Dick Works - that probably makes the Pour Inn the "works canteen" :)
If ever you are in Toronto I can thoroughly recommend catching up with Dick and sharing a few hours with him.
