Raffle First Prize - A Wife!

George is the harmonica player in the deerstalker hat (bottom left).

One member of the The Killerton Mountain Boys Jug Band was George Burford who was to meet his future wife whilst at Killerton.

George's room mate, John Bromage, persuaded George to buy a raffle ticket in a draw being organised at Rolle College in the aid of World Universities Week. Like most people buying raffle tickets for a good cause, he didn't take too much notice of the prizes on offer. He certainly didn't notice that the first prize was a night out and a meal with a girl of your choice from the Dunsinane Hall of Residence.

Dunsinane RolleGeorge paid for the ticket and thought no more of it. He did not attend the Rolle Christmas Going Down Ball where the draw took place. However, John Bromage did attend the ball and on returning to Killerton in the early hours of the following morning announced loudly to all in earshot - well, those awake anyway - that George had won first prize.

In January George was persuaded to go along to Dunsinane Hall of Residence and face the arduous task of selecting the girl of his choice. He chose Elaine Small.

They went out for the evening - and then they went out for a few more evenings - and then a lot more evenings.

In April 2021 he and Elaine will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Looking at a subset of the guest list, it would appear that George and Elaine weren't the only ones to start a more permanent relationship whilst at Rolle.
